Both organizations category leaders in OAG Punctuality League 2014

Tokyo, 13th March 2015:  OAG, the global leader in aviation intelligence, has awarded top-of-category distinctions to Osaka Airport and Japan Airlines (Mainline) for their achievements in the OAG Punctuality League 2014, the authoritative ranking of the on-time performance of airlines and airports worldwide. The awards were presented to each organization during ceremonies held at their respective locations on February 23rd and 24th.

Mark Clarkson, Business Development Director ASPAC for OAG says: “With the world’s most comprehensive schedules database of more than 900 airlines, including 113 LCCs and 4,000 airports, OAG processes more than 21 million flight status updates every month, equivalent to 715,000 each day. The insight OAG provides is used across the aviation community to better serve market needs.”

The OAG Punctuality League 2014, based on a total of 43.5 million flight records, presents on-time performance data for the following categories: Top Airports (Small; Medium; Large); Top Airlines (All; Mainline; Low-Cost Carriers, or ‘LCCs’); and Airlines by Region (Asia Pacific; The Americas; Europe; Middle East & Africa).

With 92.3% of its arrivals and departures occurring within 15 minutes of scheduled time, Osaka Airport led not only its region but the whole world in on-time performance for the Medium Airport category. The airport, which serves as the primary hub for domestic flights in the Kansai region of Japan, served 14.53m domestic passengers in 2014, an increase of 5% on 2013 and representing the third consecutive year of growth.  Operating with a ‘night-time’ curfew, Osaka Itami closely manages and maintains operational excellence to ensure OTP is as high as possible, delivering regular high standards. In 2012, the airport was integrated with Kansai International Airport (KIX) to form the New Kansai International Airport Company responsible for both airports.

Osaka was the only medium-sized airport to achieve an OTP above 90%, with Moscow Sheremetyevo and Copenhagen both recording OTP of 89.8% to jointly share 2nd place. Salt Lake City and Vienna airports took 4th and 5th respectively.

The OTP performance of Osaka Airport stands out even more prominently when compared to scores of its regional category competitors, with the 84.4% OTP of runner-up Brisbane trailing by more than 8 percentage points, followed by Okinawa Naha at 81.4%.

Notes to editors:
The OAG Punctuality League compares on-time arrival and departure performance of scheduled passenger flights operated by the Top 200 scheduled airlines as defined by Available Seat Kilometres (ASKs) in the OAG Schedules Analyser tool. The report covers the 2014 calendar year and is based upon the proportion of scheduled flights reported to arrive within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time as supplied to OAG by airlines in their regular distribution of such data.

Airlines:

  • OAG’s sample is based on approximately 43.5 million flight records. It excludes cancelled services.
  • The tables for airlines are based upon the ‘sum’ of arriving flights within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time as supplied to OAG and included in its database.
  • OAG applies a minimum coverage of 80% to qualify inclusion in the Punctuality League, ‘coverage’ being defined as the percentage of scheduled flights for which OAG has on-time performance records.
  • Low-cost airlines are as per the classifications in the OAG schedules database.
  • Regional airlines are defined as those only operating within the IATA geographical region of their registered base and therefore exclude any regional carrier that operates schedules services to points outside of its own region.

Airports:

OAG’s sample is based upon the ‘sum’ of both the departures and arrivals within 15 minutes of schedule. At least 80% of scheduled flights are reported, schedules being defined as what has been provided by airlines to the OAG database.

Airports are available for inclusion as follows:

  • Small Airports (less than 10 million seats per annum)
  • Medium Airports (between 10 million and 20 million scheduled seats per annum)
  • Large Airports (greater than 20 million scheduled seats per annum)
